Come to Hedley and bring along your binoculars and our bird viewing checklist to glimpse the migratory creatures that nest or stop to rest and refuel.
The Similkameen River is an amazing migrational route for many North American bird species. At any time of the year you will experience amazing numbers of bird sightings but of course the spring and summer are the best! We are a year-round woodpecker haven hosting Pileated, Downy, Hairy, Lewis, and Great Northern Flickers. Birds of Prey include Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Osprey, a wide variety of hawks, falcons, merlins and owls. Belted Kingfishers, Great Blue Herons, American Dippers and more all hang out at the river. Song birds abound with migrations of White and Golden Crowned Sparrows, Meadow Larks, Red-winged Blackbirds. Kinglets, Mountain Chickadees, Red Breasted and Pygmy Nuthatches, Pine and Evening Grosbeaks, too many to list. We also have our resident Black-billed Magpies, Stellar Jays and Clark’s Nutcrackers. Truly, a birder’s paradise! Twitcher’s know about us!
